nah brah business
We have our very first Nah Brah Social & Civic Club Zoom on Wednesday 3/20 @ 5 pm!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
The Nah Brah zoom is a monthly space for us to chat, catch up, ask questions, answer questions, commiserate, and share opportunities for impact. This week, we'll review the Nah Brah voter guide and prepare our ballots for March 23rd Election Day! I think it’ll be really nice to have dedicated time to find our ballots, fill them out, and make a plan to vote together. However, please note: I will not be telling you who to vote for, I’ll just be helping you go through the information/research so you can vote in your best interest.
In order to keep trolls out, the monthly Nah Brah zoom is only available to paid subscribers of this newsletter. You can manage your subscription below, and you’ll receive the registration link in the welcome email:
If you are already a paid subscriber, scroll down, and you’ll find the registration link below! (registration is quick and painless and *mandatory* so I know roughly how many people to expect)
If you haven’t voted yet, please take a moment to put these dates in your calendar and make a plan to vote:
Quick reminder that this election is a Presidential Primary and a Municipal Primary. The Presidential Primary is to vote for who you want to be the presidential candidate for your registered party. The Municipal Primary is to elect leadership positions in the state party. Which means that if you are either happy or unhappy with your registered state party, this is the election for you. This is where you will have the most impact on the direction of your party, including future candidates and campaign strategies.
For more information, go check out the Nah Brah Voter Guide that I published last week. And keep in mind that this is a hyper-local election with a lot of options, which means that it will take some time to go through your ballot and figure out who best represents you. But the upside is that:
“Your vote will never have more power than in local elections” —Ijeoma Oluo
So, VOTE LOCAL!
I do want to take a moment here to acknowledge that sometimes it really sucks to continue voting in a system that just seems intent on fucking us all over. Sometimes, it feels like all our choices blow. Sometimes, it feels like a lost cause, and I get that.
But I want to remind you that a vote does many things other than just win or lose.
A vote takes the temperature of the electorate. It provides a candidate (or a party) with either a mandate to govern or a mandate to compromise. It puts pressure on potential candidates (or chairpersons) to adjust their platform according to their electorate—but only their vocal electorate. Because if you stay silent, how tf are they going to know what you want them to do? How are they going to feel the repercussions of their actions?
And finally, a vote gives you power. It exercises your voice.
Why would you give that up voluntarily?
As always, I will remind you that voting is just one facet of civic engagement and community integration. There are so many other ways to create impact, and on that note, I urge you to take a look at the Nah Brah Social & Civic Calendar to see how you can get involved beyond your vote. This is what’s on deck for this week:*
Please note that this week’s Women on Wednesday with Lift and 10,000 Women is Reproductive Freedom Day. If that speaks to you (which I imagine it does), please consider joining them at the Capitol to flex your voice. They make it super easy and accessible.
